Something has gone missing from the libraries of Arfell. Something very old, and something very powerful. Five scholars are now dead, a country is once again on the brink of war, and the magick council is running out of time and options.
Entangled in a web of lies and politics and dragged halfway across icy Emaneska and back, Farden must unearth a secret even he doesn’t want to know, a secret that will shake the foundations of his world. Dragons, drugs, magick, death, and the deepest of betrayals await.
Just to be completely clear this is a first chapter review, so my opinions are based solely on what I read in the first chapter. I wont be providing a rating as it wouldn’t be representative of the book as a whole.
The first thing I noticed was the excellent world building, it was painted so well that I could easily picture the setting. In my head the world was very Skyrim and could easily be set in Winterhold (if you know, you know).
The chapter’s central theme is around an old book and the wise men/Mages attempts to unlock it’s secrets. A strangers exploration of a castle is also followed.
There were aspects of this chapter I really enjoyed, primarily finding out some secrets about the book.
That said, for a first chapter I don’t feel captured by the story, probably because of the latter half of the chapter which followed an unknown characters journey in a castle and a subsequent attack for unknown reasons. I feel that this early on in the story flitting between plots lost my interest.
Would I read the rest of the book? Maybe, It’s something I might come back too but, I’ve not picked it back up so far. In context this is the author Ben Galleys debut novel and was published nearly a decade ago, as I enjoyed his writing style and the genre I am inclined to read a more recent work of his as I’m sure his talents have developed over time.
